ST. 1 · Hours 0 to 4 · A fresh fine line tattoo just after the session, the skin still shining

Do

  • Leave the wrap on for two to four hours, or as your artist says.
  • Wash your hands before you touch it.
  • Take the wrap off under warm running water.
  • Wash gently with plain, unscented soap and pat dry with paper towel.

Don't

  • No re-wrapping in cling film.
  • No towels: they hold bacteria and snag.
  • No touching it to show a friend.

ST. 2 Days 1 to 3

Weeping

Do

  • Wash it twice a day, morning and night.
  • Let it air dry for ten minutes after washing.
  • Sleep in clean cotton. Expect a little ink on the sheet.

Don't

  • No balm yet if it is still weeping.
  • No tight sleeves or straps over it.
  • No alcohol the first night.

ST. 3 Days 4 to 14

Flaking

ST. 3 · Days 4 to 14 · A black tattoo mid-heal, the surface dull and lightly flaking

Do

  • A thin layer of unscented balm, two or three times a day.
  • Let the flakes fall on their own.
  • Keep it out of the sun completely.

Don't

  • No picking, no scratching. Slap it if it itches.
  • No pools, baths, sea or saunas. Showers only.
  • No gym on that muscle for the first week.

ST. 4 Weeks 2 to 4

Settling

Do

  • Keep moisturising once a day.
  • Expect a milky, cloudy look. It clears.
  • Back to the gym and the pool from week three.

Don't

  • No sun without SPF 50 from here on.
  • No judging the colour yet.

ST. 5 Week 6

Healed

Do

  • Photograph it in daylight and send it to us.
  • Book your free touch-up if a line needs it (within three months).
  • SPF 50 for life. Sun is what fades a tattoo.

Don't

  • No need to keep using balm unless the skin is dry.
